{ April 2014 } Arunachal Pradesh Capital Itanagar gets its first passenger train

Current Affairs :- April 2014

7th April 2014 was a great day for the capital of Arunachal Pradesh - Itanagar, which got its first passenger train. Train was having total 10 passengers and two goods compartments with a diesel engine.
Earlier Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced introducing train service in his package for the state on January 31, 2008. Itanagar thus becomes the second state capital among the eight north-eastern states after Guwahati to be put on the railway map of India. The train’s first journey started from Dekargaon and ended at Naharlagun after covering a distance of 181 km.

{April 2014} Sale of Self testing kits for HIV legalised by UK

Current Affairs :- April 2014

On 6th April 2014, A new law legalizing sale of self-testing kits for HIV came into force in United Kingdom (UK). The new law allows individuals to buy the self-testing kits available on shops and self-diagnose for HIV at home itself. Earlier this law was approved by the UK Government in September 2013.
Testing could involve taking a small drop of blood from a finger, or a swab from the inside of the mouth which can be easily read by people with no medical knowledge or training.

This is considered important by experts as about 25 per cent of HIV positive people in the UK do not know they are HIV positive and are vulnerable to other people to pass it.

{April 2014} China dug the 7 km deep borehole over Tibetan Plateau in search for oil

Current Affairs :- April 2014

Chinese exploration team drilled a seven kilometer deep borehole in the Himalayan region of Tibet in search of oil and natural gas resources of the region. On Tibetan plateau Sinopec and China National Petroleum Corporation carried out this exploration project.

In August 2013, the China Geological Survey, under the Ministry of Land and Resources, signed a 20 million yuan (USD 3.5 million) exploration agreement with Sinopec after the Tibet region showed enormous oil and natural gas potential.

{April 2014) Heena Sidhu on India clinched World's No. 1 spot in 10 mts air pistol event

India's Heena Sidhu has clinched the World's Number One spot in 10 metres air pistol event.
The rankings was released by International Shooting Sport Federation claimed that Sindhu was successful in achieving the World Number 1 spot through her performances in the recent events. 
Earlier, Sindhu won a gold medal in the Asian Air Gun Championship in March 2014 and she also finished with a silver medal at the ISSF rifle or pistol World Cup in Fort Benning in United States. 

Heena Sidhu shot a world record score to win a gold medal in the world Cup 2013 in Munich.

{April 2014} Ravi Chauhan appointed as MD for India by SAP

SAP has announced the appointment of Ravi Chauhan as Managing Director for SAP India with immediate effect. Ravi Chauhan will be responsible for driving SAP India’s growth strategy and operations across the country.

SAP was founded in Walldorf, Germany in 1972 by five ex-IBM engineers. SAP stands for Systeme, Andwendungen, Produkte in der Datenverarbeitung which translated to English means Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing. 

{April 2014} Renowned cinematographer VK Murthy passed away

Current Affairs :- April 2014 

Renowned cinematographer VK Murthy passed away on 7th April 2014 at his residence in Shankarapuram. He was also Dada Saheb Phalke awardee. He was 91 years old and was famous for his camera work in Guru Dutt’s classics like Pyaasa and Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam. He also received International Indian Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005 among many other awards.

Important to note : 


VK Murthy was the first technician to be honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award in 2008.

On 6th March 2014, Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia won the men's singles title of 250000 US dollar India Super Series Badminton in New Delhi. He defeated Chen Long of China in straight-game by 21-13, 21-17.

Shixian Wang won the women’s singles title by defeating top seed Li Xuerui 22-20, 21-19.

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd to buy generic drugmaker Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd for $3.2 billion.
"Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd and Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd today announced that they have entered into definitive agreements pursuant to which Sun Pharma will acquire 100 per cent of Ranbaxy in an all-stock transaction," the two companies said in a statement.

Ranbaxy shareholders will receive 0.8 share of Sun Pharma for each share of Ranbaxy.

{April 2014} Repo Rate kept unchanged by RBI in First Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Statement of 2014-15

Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its first Bi-monthly Monetary Policy statement 2014-15 announced on 1 April 2014, has kept the policy repo rate unchanged at 8.0%. 
In the first bi-monthly monetary policy statement for 2014-15, the RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan decided to pause and not disturb status quo. The repo rate and the rate at which RBI lends money to banks remained at 8 per cent. 

Other policy instruments such as cash reserve ratio also remain unchanged at 4%. The economic growth of country slipped to a decade-low of 4.5 per cent in 2012-13 and is estimated at 4.9 per cent in the current financial year 2013-14.

President Francois Hollande named former Interior Minister Manuel Valls as France's new prime minister on 31st March 2014. He made this decision after his Socialists suffered heavy losses in nationwide municipal elections.
Manuel Carlos Valls is a Spanish-born French Socialist Party politician. He was the Mayor of Evry from 2001 to 2012 and a Member of the National Assembly since 2002.

Valls is consistently voted France's most popular Socialist in opinion polls and He replaces Jean Marc Ayrault.

Manuel Valls is 51 year's old. 

{April 2014} Indian-American cardiologist Dr Sumeet Chugh wins prestigious Simon Dack Award

Indian American cardiologist Dr Sumeet Chugh has been named as one of the recipients of a prestigious award from the American College of Cardiology. Dr Sumeet Chugh,  an MD and associate director of Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute,  will receive the Simon Dack Award along with another researcher.

Important to note : 


Dr Sumeet Chugh also leads the World Health Organization (WHO) panel which performs a worldwide assessment of heart rhythm disorders for the Global Burden of Disease study.

{April 2014} Japanese Government should stop its Whaling Programme Jarpa II ordered ICJ

Current Affairs :- April 2014

The UN's International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, Netherland on 31st March 2014 has ruled that the Japanese government must halt its whaling programme Jarpa II in the Antarctic Ocean. 
ICJ agreed the programme was not for scientific research as claimed by Tokyo. The court's decision is considered legally binding. Japan has agreed to abide by the decision.

Important to note : 


Japan signed up a moratorium on whaling in 1986 under the International Whaling Commission, but continued whaling in the north and south Pacific under provisions that allowed for scientific research.

On 31st March 2014, US Ambassador to India Nancy Powell announced her resignation in the US Mission Town Hall meeting.The resignation was submitted to Barack Obama, the President of US. 


In previous years of her career she had postings as the US Ambassador includes Uganda, Ghana, Pakistan, Nepal and India.   

{April 2014} Bhullar's death sentence commuted to life imprisonment by Supreme Court

Current Affairs :- April 2014 

The Supreme Court commuted the death sentence of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar to the life imprisonment on 31 March 2014 on the basis of a curative petition. Mental illness and inordinate delay in deciding his mercy petition were the main reasons behind this decision. The landmark judgment of the apex court on 21 January also played a crucial role in the entire case.


The Centre while admitting the delay in deciding his mercy petition, informed the Supreme Court on 27 March 2014 that it has no problem with the commutation of death sentence of Devinderpal Singh Bhullar

{April 2014} Re-promulgation of SEBI Ordinance 2013 cleared by President

Current Affairs :- April 2014 

On 30th March 2014, President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee cleared the re-promulgation of the SEBI Ordinance Securities Laws (Amendment) Bill 2013.
The ordinance aims to give powers to Securities and Exchanges Board of India (SEBI) to act against Ponzi scheme.


Earlier, the Ordinance was re-promulgated on the advice of the Union Cabinet by the President on 18 July 2013 and again on 16 September 2013.

{April 2014} "Polling at your fingertips", a sms based service launched in Shillong

On 31st March 2014, Mr P Naik (The Chief Electoral Officer) launched SMS based service named "Polling at your Fingertips" in Shillong, Meghalaya. 
This is one of the most innovative steps started for the voters under which they will have to enter their EPIC number and send it to 9856066666. 


The EPIC SMS from the voter will provide him all the details of their electoral number, polling stations, timing and date in their mobile phones. 
The SMS service will be charged at 3 rupees per SMS.

{ March 2014 } General Sedki Sobhi is new Defence Minister and Army Chief of Egypt

Among the international current affairs, important to note that on 27th March 2014 General Sedki Sobhi was sworn in as the new Defence Minister and Army Chief of Egypt. This happened after resignation of Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
The Interim President of Egypt Adly Mansour confirmed the General Sedki Sobhi appointment. 

Important to note : 

Former Army Cheif of Egypt Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi resigned on 26 March 2014 to contest in Presidential election. He led the military coup to overthrew Mohammed Morsi, the then President of Egypt in July 2013.

{ March 2014 } All States and UTs directed to implement Manual Scavengers Act by Supreme Court

Current Affairs :- March 2014

All the States and Union Territories were directed by Supreme Court of India on 27th March 2014 to implement Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
Bench comprised of Chief Justice P Sathasivam, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice N V Ramana ordered a series of directions to abolish the practice of manual scavenging. The Apex court also deprecated the practice of manually removing night soil with bare hands, brooms or metal scrappers.

Guidelines by Supreme Court : 

At least one member of their family shall be given, subject to eligibility and willingness, training in livelihood skill and shall be paid a monthly stipend during rehabilitation period. Besides, one adult member of the family is given subsidy or concessional loan for taking up an alternative occupation.
To address sewer deaths, it suggested that entering sewer lines without safety gears should be made a crime even in emergency situations. And for such death, a compensation of 10 lakh rupees should be given to the family of the died.

The people who were employed as scavengers should be allotted residential plots or constructed houses or money for such construction according to their eligibility and willingness.
Persons released from manual scavenging should not have to cross hurdles to receive what is their legitimate due under the law. 
Safai karamchari women should be provided support for dignified livelihood in accordance with their choice of livelihood schemes.
The Railways should take time-bound strategy to end manual scavenging on the tracks and persons released from manual scavenging should not have to cross hurdles to receive what is their legitimate due under the law.

Important to note : 

In the year 2002-03, there were 676009 identified manual scavengers in the country.

{ March 2014 ] Indian Export of Spices increased by 41percent during April to December 2013

Spices exports from India has seen considerable increase as, during April-December 2014 it has seen increase of 41 percent. This was brought in the notice by Spices Board of India at Kochi. Pepper and Cardamom were the leading contributors in the spices export with Pepper with 1846 crore rupees.

Spices Board of India comes under Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. Current Chairman of Spices board of India is A Jayathilak.

{ March 2014 } All banks are required to comply with the Basel III norms by 31 March 2019

Among the important Banking Current Affairs, on 27th March 2014 RBI announced that it has extended the deadline for Indian banks to meet capital requirements under the so-called Basel III norms by a year to 31 March 2019. RBI offering relief to an industry burdened by bad loans in the face of slower economic growth.

As per RBI, In view of the implementation of Basel III Capital Regulations, banks need to improve and strengthen their capital planning processes. 

What is Basel III ?
Basel III is a comprehensive set of reform measures, developed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, to strengthen the regulation, supervision and risk management of the banking sector.

{ MARCH 2014 } India certified as Polio Free country by WHO

Current Affairs :- March 2014 

A good current affair coming for Indians. On 27th March 2014 The World Health Organisation (WHO) certified India as a Polio free Country officialy. This news was out many days back but its official now. By this India became among the 11 countries of South East Region to hold a tag of polio free country.

The Union Health Minister of India Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad received official certificate in New Delhi. The polio was eradicated from the country with the help of technological innovations and combined efforts. 

Important to note : 

India introduced the oral polio vaccine in 1985. India's first national polio immunization campaign to stop polio was launched in 1995. That time on an average 50000 children were getting affected by polio every year. Now after 2011 there is not even a single case reported of polio.
Polio is a disease that can be prevented only but there is no cure for it. 

{ March 2014 } Gopal Rao won UK Twitter Prize

Gopal Rao, An Indian origin MBA student at the University of Cambridge has won a Twitter competition which asked a question regarding UK's foreign policy. Prize was to  British Foreign Secretary William Hague and to discuss the Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative (PSVI).

PSVI was launched on May 29, 2012 by Hague. It aims to strengthen and support international efforts to respond to sexual violence in conflict - including by enhancing the capacity of countries, institutions, and communities to support survivors and end impunity for perpetrators.

Bollywood Actor Arjun Kapoor on 27 March 2014 was selected as the brand ambassador of the Earth hour 2014. On 29th March 2014 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m Earth Hour 2014 will be observed. It is very nice initiative which under which citizens are advised to switch off all electricity for an hour.

It was started in Sydney, Australia in 2007. In 2013 it was celebrated on 23 March 2013.

Cricket's Deodhar Trophy 2014 was won by West Zone on 27th March 2014. West Zone defeated North Zone in the final at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

Important to note :

Deodhar Trophy is a 50-over over inter zonal knockout Indian domestic cricket tournament. It is annual tournament played among five zonal teams namely North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone and Central Zone. 
It is named after Prof. D. B. Deodhar.

Indian acid attack victim Laxmi was honoured with prestigious International Women of Courage Award on 4th March 2014. She received this prestigious award at the State Department ceremony in Washington by first lady of US Michelle Obama. She got this award as she has fought hard to end acid attacks and also fighting legal cases for same.

{ March 2014 } Sheila Dikshit appointed as the new Governor of Kerala

Former cheif minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit was appointed as Governor of Kerala on 4th March 2014. She has become 22nd Governor of Kerala. 
She will succeed Nikhil Kumar, a former Delhi Police Commissioner who took over as the governor of Kerala in March 2013. Nikhil Kumar had given resignation to the President of India that has been accepted.

Important to note : 

Sheila Dikshit served as three times Delhi's chief minister from 1998 to 2013.

Third BIMSTEC summit hosted by Myanmar concluded on 4th March 2014 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. 
The Third BIMSTEC summit was attended by the heads from six countries and Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Thailand, namely 
Prime Minister of India - Manmohan Singh,
Prime Minister of Bangladesh - Sheikh Hasina, 
Prime Minister of Nepal - Sushil Koirala,
President of Sri Lanka - Mahinda Rajapaksa,

Following three pacts were signed :
Memorandum of Association on the Establishment of the BIMSTEC Permanent Secretariat.

Memorandum of Association among BIMSTEC Member Countries Concerning Establishment of a BIMSTEC Centre for Weather and Climate.

{ March 2014 } Post Office's hiked interest rate Fixed deposits by 0.2%

Currrent Affairs :- March 2014 

Government of India on 4th March 2014 hiked the interest rates on fixed deposit scheme that is offered by post offices by up to 0.2 percent. 
These new interest rates will be effective from 1st April 2014 onwards.
After this hike :
Return on 1 to 2 years deposit – hiked by 20 basis points from 8.2 percent to 8.4 percent 
Return on 3-year maturities – hiked from 8.3 percent to 8.4 percent

Return on for 5-year deposits - it has been raised to 8.5 percent

{ March 2014 } Lok Sabha elections to be held in 9 phases from 7 April 2014 - 12 May 2014

The Election Commission of India announced the schedule for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on 5th March 2014.
The Election Commission said that elections will be held in nine phases from April 7, 2014 to May 12, 2014.
With this announcement the Model Code of Conduct has come into force with immediate effect. 

Important Dates of Lok Sabha Elections 2014 : 


  • First Phase on 7 April 2014 - will cover five Lok Sabha constituencies in Assam and one in Tripura
  • Second Phase on 9 April 2014 - will cover seven constituencies spread over Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland
  • Third Phase on 10 April 2014 - will cover 92 constituencies of 14 states including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra 
  • Fourth Phase on 12 April 2014 – will cover five constituencies in three states including Assam will be covered
  • Fifth Phase on 17 April 2014 – will cover 122 Lok Sabha seats of 13 states namely Karnataka, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Bihar
  • Sixth Phase on 24 April 2014 – will cover 117 seats in 12 states namely including Assam, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh
  • Seventh Phase 30 April 2014 – will cover 89 constituencies spread over nine states including Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal

{ March 2014 } R. Neelakantan appointed as CFO by SpiceJet

SpiceJet Ltd, second largest low-cost carrier, appointed R Neelakantan as its chief financial officer (CFO) on 4th March 2014. R Neelakantan will be replacing Sam Isaac.

Important to note : 

R Neelakantan had served as CFO from November 2010 to February 2013 in SpiceJet Ltd so he is returning to the role after serving as the internal audit head at the parent Sun Group.
SpiceJet Ltd also made other appointements :
Shilpa Bhatia as senior VP for sales and distribution, 
Sudhakar Kondisetty as senior VP of information technology, 
Fares Azeem Kilpady as VP and head of revenue management,
Anurag Jain as senior VP network planning and strategy development.

{ March 2014 } South African cricket team Captain Graeme Smith announced retirement

South African cricket team captain Graeme Smith announced that he will retire from international cricket at the end of the test match against Australia at Newlands. He announced it on 4th March 2014.
Important to note : 
Graeme Smith is the longest serving captain for South Africa in international cricket. 
Till date Graeme Smith has played 197 one-day international matches, 33 T20 international matches and 117 test matches

Graeme Smith made his test debut in March 2002 against Australia in Cape Town.

{ March 2014 } In Quarter 3 of 2013-14 - Current Account Deficit declined to 0.9 percent of GDP

A Report on Developments in India’s Balance of Payments released by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 5th March 2014. As per this report Current Account Deficit (CAD) reached to its lowest in the past eight years.

{ March 2014 ] National Cycling Academy inaugurated in New Delhi

Current Affairs :- March 2014 

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Mr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Sports Authority of India National Cycling Academy (SAI NCA) at Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, New Delhi on 5th March 2014. 
The academy with complete back-up facilities has been set up following the decision taken in the 42nd meeting of the Governing Body of SAI. The academy would be financed by the government initially, ultimately becoming self-sustaining in the long run.
The academy would cater to the identification and nurturing of talent at both sub-junior and junior levels and to the training of elite athletes for international/national competitions. 
Apart from above said inauguration, the Youth Affairs and Sports Minister also launched a project to create swimming pools at three stadiums in the New Delhi, namely 
Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JNS)
Indira Gandhi Sports Complex (IGSC)
Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range
Project of creating swimming polls is having an estimated cose of 907.50 Lakhs.

{ March 2014 } NDMC announces special health scheme for women

Current Affairs :- March 2014 

New Health scheme named "Stri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna" was launched by North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) for women. This scheme was launchedon 6th March 2014. The Scheme aims to bring services closer for those living in rural areas and unauthorized colonies. 
Various health camps and mass awareness drives will be held under this scheme in various areas of North Delhi. Medical services will be provided through various hospitals, nodal centres and mobile dispensaries marked for this scheme.

{ March 2014 } 64th National Basketball Championship concluded in New Delhi

Current Affairs :- March 2014 

Delhi hosted 64th National Basketball Championship. This championship concluded on 5th March 2014 at the Thyagaraj Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The winners received one lakh rupees, while the first and second runners-up received 75000 rupees and 50000 rupees respectively.
Harish Sharma Most Valuable Player Award :
Rikin Pethani of Tamil Nadu and Kavita Kumari of Chhattisgarh were awarded the Harish Sharma Most Valuable Player Award.

Important to note : 

Chhattishgarh emerged as winner of women's title beating Indian Railways 81-77.
Tamil Nadu emerged as winner of men's title as they defeated Punjab 74-57 to win the this title. 

{ March 2014 } Indo-Nepal joint military exercise underway at Sailahandi

Current Affairs :- March 2014 

India and Nepal on 6 March 2014 started a joint military exercise which will end on 18 March 2014. This Indo-Nepal joint military exercise at Saljhandi in Rupandehi district of Nepal.
Nepal Army Major General Victor SJB Rana inaugurated this two week exercise. This exercise is named as Ex-Surya Kiran Drills VI.
This excerise includes 250 personnel from Indian Army and 200 personnel from Nepal Army.

Important to note : 

The joint training between the armies of the two countries started following an agreement reached during the 7th India-Nepal Bilateral Consultative Group on Security in 2011.
